- 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 1 large egg (for egg wash)
- Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)
- Optional: melted chocolate or icing for drizzling
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Divide the dough into equal pieces and shape them into pretzels.
- In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add baking soda.
- Carefully drop each pretzel into the boiling water for about 30 seconds, then remove and place on a baking sheet.
- Brush each pretzel with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Let them cool slightly before serving. Drizzle with melted chocolate or icing if desired.
